Ethereum overview

Ethereum was first proposed in a 2013 white paper by Vitalik Buterin, who envisioned a platform that could do more than just facilitate digital currency transactions. After a successful initial coin offering (ICO) in 2014, the Ethereum blockchain officially launched in 2015. Ethereum has led to the creation of new products and services that can improve different areas of our lives. From financial tools and digital ownership to governance and science, there is a growing list of use cases. Ethereum is a decentralized, open source, and distributed computing platform that enables the creation of smart contracts and decentralized applications, also known as dapps. An introduction to smart contracts, consensys algorithms, cryptographic tokens, and decentralized applications. These four pillars of dapp technology are designed to enable smart contracts. Smart contracts usually have a user interface that can be implemented as a web page, an application, or a mobile app. In the future, traditional contracts may become outdated for the purposes of certain transactions.

About Ethereum

  • Traded on regulated exchanges and MTFs, these certificates provide transparent pricing and liquidity, reinforcing investor confidence in secure digital asset investments.
  • Smart contracts usually have a user interface that can be implemented as a web page, an application, or a mobile app.
  • A significant event in Ethereum’s history was the „Merge,” a major upgrade that took place in 2022.

  • For instance, a smart contract could be used to represent a legal contract emulating the logic of contractual clauses or a financial contract specifying responsibilities of the counterparts and automated flows of value.

Rather than drafting a costly, lengthy contract employing attorneys, banks, notaries, and Microsoft Word, contracts could be created with a few lines of code. Smart contracts could potentially be constructed automatically by wiring together a handful of human-readable clauses. Smart contracts are computer protocols that facilitate, verify, or enforce the negotiation and performance of some sort of agreement. For instance, a smart contract could be used to represent a legal contract emulating the logic of contractual clauses or a financial contract specifying responsibilities of the counterparts and automated flows of value. Ethereum was launched in 2015 as a decentralized, globally distributed, open-source blockchain network, accessible to everyone regardless of their background and origin. Its official currency is Ether (ETH), with the platform’s name often used interchangeably with the cryptocurrency.

Using Ethereum can mean lots of things to lots of people. Maybe you want to sign in to an app, prove your online identity, or transfer some ETH. The easiest way to create and access an account is using software called a wallet. A significant event in Ethereum’s history was the „Merge,” a major upgrade that took place in 2022. This transition shifted the network’s consensus mechanism from a energy-intensive Proof of Work (PoW) model to a more efficient Proof of Stake (PoS) model.

Ethereum is a programmable blockchain that enables developers to build and deploy decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts. As a Turing-complete platform, it can execute complex code and has become the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, behind Bitcoin. Ethereum introduced the concept of a smart contract platform. These are self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement directly written into lines of code. They run on the blockchain, so they are transparent, immutable, and don’t require a third party to enforce the terms. Users pay a network fee, known as gas, in Ether to execute these smart contracts and other transactions.

Notably, Ethereum is a pioneer in developing a blockchain platform specifically for smart contracts, which is considered one of its most significant innovations. The supply of “Ether coins” is not capped or subject to deflationary measures. Like most cryptocurrencies, Ethereum uses a decentralized, publicly accessible digital ledger (blockchain) that transparently records all Ether transactions. Since its release, Ethereum utilized the Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus protocol to verify transactions and maintain agreement on the state of all information recorded on the dinexura blockchain. Each Ethereum block typically contains five Ether and requires around 14 seconds to process.
